I know I'm biased, but really, I'm not necessarily what you'd call an Apple fanboy (I'm even thinking about letting my contract end and getting a "normal" phone because I'm tired of having a smartphone.) But all that said, if you're getting a smartphone, get an iPhone. It is hands down the best smartphone option. I've tried the Droid, I've used other smart phones. When it comes down to it, nothing is as good. I'm talking about quality of the camera (not mexapixels, quality), the smoothness of the interface (absolutely nothing compares), the wonderful customer service, ever-developing, most robust app store, video chatting (between two iPhone 4's). Really, there's no other better phone. I urge you to try it in person and not just look at specs. And really, I'm not biased. I hate it when people recommend Apple for the sake of Apple.
