Hi Larry,

Isn't amazing what technology is doing to childhood?

The safety component is really a huge one for most parents, but GPS tracking has done a lot for other areas of our society as well. It has made much of our shipping and delivery services more efficient. it has helped emergency personnel respond to emergencies faster. It even helps families keep better tabs on their pets.

GPS kids watches are just one example of how GPS tracking is solving real life problems for families - the safety issue. But I wonder if they could be just as useful for increasing family efficiencies as well?

A parent could us their covert GPS tracking device installed on their teen's car to see if they are closer to a younger sibling than you are. When we put our minds to it, the possibilities are endless.

Hi, Well I could never have thought about a GPS as kid because they did not exist. But I have a child related blog talking about children and I do address the safety issue. I might revisit the topic one of these days.

Hi Susan,

This is completely understandable. Little children, especially boys, have a knack for breaking things or getting them dirty. Don't worry though, most GPS watches are very sturdy and weather fairly well. I certainly don't recommend keeping them submersed under water for extended periods of time or taking a hammer to them, but under most normal wearing conditions they should be just fine.

I like these ideas, but I'm not so sure that they will work with my child. He is a little rambunctious and doesn't like to keep things on his wrist. Even if he did, he would always be banging it into something or getting it all dirty. I just don't think that this will work for him.

I remember having a watch like you describe, but my watch was a He-man watch that I got for Christmas one year. It was the greatest gift that I can remember getting. I wish it had some of that GPS power in it too, that would have been freakin' awesome!
