I don’t think this Jacksonville, Florida man knew what he was getting himself into when he placed a GPS tracking device on the car of his estranged wife. He probably thought he was somehow telling her that he love him. Apparently both she and the police have a different opinion about that type of activity.

A 45-year-old Westside Jacksonville man was arrested late Monday on a charge of stalking after a GPS tracking device was just one of the high-tech ways used to keep track of his estranged wife.

James Craig Crosby of the 8100 block of Niska Trail was booked into the Duval County jail just before midnight and was out on $2,500 bail nine hours later, according to jail records.

The man’s estranged wife, 39-year-old Christina Crosby, walked into the Zone 4 police substation at 6 p.m. Monday with a portable GPS tracker in her hand after discovering it attached to her car, the arrest report said. She said she was suspicious how James Crosby “always knew where to find her.” She also said someone tampered with her Facebook account, deleting a male friend’s name and adding her estranged husband’s.

In an Oct. 26 incident she told police she was at the Wesconnett public library on 103rd Street with their 7-year-old son when she looked up and her estranged husband was standing there. He left before police arrived. When she went home that night, all of her underwear had been stolen, but there was no sign of forced entry at the home. Someone also was monitoring her home computer use through a remote logger.

Police said they questioned James Crosby at his home at 10:15 p.m. Monday, learning the GPS device had been planted on the woman’s car almost three month’s ago and monitored 20 times on his home computer.

Maybe this guy took the creepily famous song Every Breath You Take by the Police a little too literally. He was tracking her car, her computer, and probably her cell phone. That does not say I love you, no matter what millions of women think when Sting sings it.

Creepiest. Song. Ever. Well maybe not ever. This song is way creepier:

You have to admit, tracking someone with GPS does not say I love you!

There is little doubt that teens know technology better than their parents. Now there is anecdotal data that suggest that teen stalkers and abusers are leveraging the built in capabilities of cell phones to empower them to abuse even more. The article is mainly about teen abuse as the quotes below suggest, but the bit on the GPS cell phone tracking is pretty interesting and illuminating.

Here are some of the snippets from the article:

Claudia Martinez, a community educator at Day One, the only organization in New York City that works exclusively with teenagers on dating violence and abuse, led the workshop discussing the ways young people are forced to deal with such violence given their limited options.

Teen dating violence often goes overlooked by authorities and domestic violence agencies, and Martinez noted that often adults minimize the experiences of teens without realizing that a serious problem could be occurring.

Many cases involve partners breaking into survivors’ Facebook accounts. Some abusers even go as far as installing GPS tracking systems to keep control.

“There is an app on the iPhone that has GPS on it, if you turn it on, your friends can see where you are and it’s really easy to install,” Martinez said. Some abusers go as far as tracking through parental features on a cell phone.

The important thing for teens and parents to take away from this is to ensure cell phone security. Here are some helpful hint things to think about when considering cell phone safety:

Never let anyone download and install something on your phone without your permission. This means periodically going through the installed apps on your phone to see what is on there.

Parents are in charge of the cell phone if they are the one paying for it. A parent is ultimately responsible for the device.

Never give out your username and password to your phone provider. This way no one can activate the parental controls on the phone without your knowledge

If you are getting abused, please reach out and get help. You don’t deserve it and it needs to stop.

If you are an abuser you need to stop and get help.

Have you ever thought that your spouse might be cheating on you? Have you thought about using a GPS tracking device to find out? According to some anecdotal reports from GPS tracking manufacturers more and more people are taking advantage of this technological option when trying to decide whether or not the person they love is cheating on them.

According to the Dallas Morning News:

In a recent poll by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 81 percent of divorce attorneys say they have seen an increase in the number of cases using social networking evidence during the last five years.

Leaving that digital paper trail makes cheating easier to track. Tiger Woods’ recent scandal is a prime example.

At BrickHouse Security in New York, sales are brisk this time of year. The firm sells devices that help catch amorous affairs. The company specializes in selling tiny spy cameras and GPS devices the size of a matchbook. The company used to sell directly to law enforcement. But it soon realized it was missing out on a whole other market.

“It’s a busy time of year for us,” said Todd Morris, BrickHouse Security’s CEO. “It’s almost like Valentine’s Day is our Christmas.”

Morris said when the company opened up the phone lines five years ago to the public, the salespeople became like counselors listening to the most sordid of affairs.

According to Morris, his company is experiencing a 242 percent surge in sales of digital surveillance products in the 30 days leading up to Valentine’s Day compared with last year.

“What people are looking to buy is peace of mind,” he said. “At least 50 percent of the people who are worried find out their suspicions are correct.

“That leaves 50 percent who are just paranoid.”

Personally, I think that this statistic is both shocking and disturbing. Fifty percent of people who suspect their spouse of cheating to the point where they will go out and purchase some type of GPS tracking are right. This is an extremely sad state of affairs for committed relationships.

It could be that GPS is simply helping bring this phenomenon to the surface so that we can all see it, but I do wish that things were different. Relationships should never end with cheating or an affair, and I am glad that GPS tracking is there to help the one being cheated on figure it out and end the relationship. But it saddens me deeply that such technology is necessary.
